Tumblr Art Spotlight

First, I started with Facebook… Then added Twitter. Most recently, I’ve been using Tumblr which allows me to push out to both Facebook and Twitter. Considering I’m managing 3 accounts (myself, Niche.LA, Gallery Row), Tumblr was by far the best option.

Tumblr is like halfway between Facebook and Twitter, but a lot more artistic and without the advertising. Anyway, my Niche.LA Blog was just included in the Art Spotlight and we’re getting lots of new followers…

Thank you Tumblr!  This has only motivated me to curate better video art more consistently all day long.

Skulls

Checked out the Caravaggio exhibit at LACMA and noticed everybody has a skull on their desk… so now I want a skull to put on my desk.

UCLA Guest Lecturer

For the second time, I was invited by Professor Terri Anderson to guest lecture at her Arts, Entertainment & Social Change UCLA honors class. Last year, I spoke for over 2 hours so I came better prepared and kept it under 60 minutes. For homework, they had to attend art walk and write about their experiences. It was extremely encouraging to receive so many well thought out questions and I hope my stories will serve them well.

This Is Our Life

As a child growing up in the 80s, Ghostbusters was not only my anthem but also my favorite movie so it was a huge honor to work with Ray Parker, Jr and produce the first music video for the Parker Boys. It was my first time working with kids on set which was great fun and I totally thought we should be producing television for Disney Channel.

LARS VON TRIER WANTS YOUR CONCEPTUAL VIDEO ART

This week Lars von Trier put out a call for submissions to be part of his new user-generated project, Gesamt. Honestly this project sounds pretty weirdo (and is in some way probably slightly sexist and anti-semitic) but, as it is emphasized: “Technical skills are not the biggest priority — originality and enthusiasm are much more important.”

The main point is to respond—in some sense via video—to six major works of art that von Trier picked. Though all artist he is asking to respond to are dudes, the press release notes several times that, if chosen, you will be working with a young female director.

Deadline is September 6th. Gesamt will premiere 12th of October 2012 in Kunsthal Charlottenborg.

Niche.LA presents the premiere of Art Battle LA Aug 30th 9pm on KCET!

Art Battle LA
directed & edited by Eric Heights
written & produced by Nic Cha Kim

Los Angeles, CA – Niche.LA Video Art presents the premiere of Art Battle LA on August 30th, 2012 at 9pm on KCET’s show Open Call, a television series highlighting Los Angeles’s many vibrant arts communities including the Colburn School Conservatory of Music, UCLA Live, Los Angeles Ballet, and Live @ The Ford.

Directed by Eric Heights, Art Battle LA chronicles four graffiti artists as they “battle” in a BritWeek sponsored competition judged by Jaguar and Christopher Guy Designs. Follow along as Mear One, Man One, Inkie, and Eine spend a week together painting murals all over Los Angeles under the direction of LA Freewalls to support Hollywood Arts, a nonprofit dedicated to helping emancipated foster children living in the streets by teaching them employable arts skills.

“I wanted this documentary to reflect the new generation of artists emerging through graffiti art culture with a compassionate narrative structure that brings exclusive discussions on modern street art to a new audience,” says Director Eric Heights.

Hosted by internationally-acclaimed mezzo-soprano opera singer Suzanna Guzman, Open Call sets the stage as Suzanna gives her unique insight into the evening’s program and encourages filmmakers to provide additional commentary to help tell the story.

“We are proud to work with KCET to showcase a misunderstood art form in a more positive light. These are talented artists that do a lot for charities. We should recognize their contributions and support their work,” says Executive Producer Nic Cha Kim.

Niche.LA Video Art thanks Bob Peirce of BritWeek and Bohdan Zachary of KCET for the opportunity to tell this unique story about graffiti and street art for the sake of benefiting charity. Niche.LA also thanks all the amazing artists and dedicated crew that worked on this documentary. We couldn’t have done it without you!

Downtown LA Art Walk – LAPD & Protesters Clash!

After a great afternoon and evening of giving my usual tour of Gallery Row during the Downtown LA Art Walk, we were stopped by a line of police officers on our way back to our cars blocking Spring Street between 5th and 6th. It was around 10pm and the group now consisted of actress/blogger Beverly Sotelo, Niche.LA Production Manager Norberto Briceno, and our amazing new Gallery Row intern, Nicolei Gupit.

July 4, 2012 – Downtown LA – Fireworks Show Out My 10th Floor Window

Ever since I adopted my dog Jack, I haven’t been able to leave the house and celebrate Independence Day. I could bring him along, but he’d be a nervous wreck wherever we’d go and it doesn’t help they’ve been going off all week leading up to tonight. No dog likes fireworks, but my neighborhood really goes to town.

The only consolation is the fact I have the most amazing firework show out my 10th floor window near Downtown Los Angeles. No fancy editing here… just point, shoot, cut, upload.
