The Israeli Pavilion at the 2013 Venice Biennale features a multichannel installation by Gilad Ratman. The narrative of the film is as follows: people enter a cave, partake in a subterranean adventure, emerge inside the Israeli Pavilion, and sculpt a bust that is then fitted with a microphone. The installation is deconstructed into several screens with the space, screen, image and sound all separated, “underscoring the dichotomy of surface and beyond.” The work seeks to position the Biennale as “a utopian model of international connectivity, proposing a world in which national borders may be transgressed via “underground networks.”
